Chinese Festivals
The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac. Like the Western calendar, The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly one, with the start of the lunar year being based on the cycles of the moon. Therefore, because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. This year it falls on February 12th. A complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five cycles of 12 years each. The Chinese Lunar Calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."

端午節
The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first.
The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings.
The celebration's is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei. If one manages to stand an egg on it's end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one

Danshuei Agei
Agei is one of the famous snacks in Danshuei. The name Agei is actually from Japanese, abura-age, which means oily tofu. Walking along Danshuei Old Street, you will see a lot of stores selling A-gei.Cooks will scoop the middle of tofu, and then stuff marinated or minced pork and Dong-fen (literally meaning green bean noodles) into the hollow tofu. Second, cover fish batter on tofu’s top. Thirdly, steam it until it is ready to eat. At last, sprinkle sweet and spicy sauce made specially. Now, you may enjoy the taste of Agei. The combination of chewy Dong-fen, tofu, and pleasant sauce match perfectly. You may also order a bowl of fish ball to go with Agei.

Emily:
We had a short trip to the new garden in Chung-Cheng last Friday. Look at the photos, isn't it fantastic? You can discover a lot of amazing beings. We had a great experience here.
A lovely afternoon to the science garden by Shannon:
On Friday, Teacher Emily took our group of six to the science garden in school. It was called the science garden because it has many plants, flowers and big trees around it. It is spring time now and I smelled a nice and refresh aroma in the garden. I also saw many little insects, such as butterflies and ants hiding between leaves and inside holes on the trees. There was also a small pond that went through the middle of the garden, where I saw cute little tadpoles in it. We had a lovely afternoon and I wish we could get another chance to go there.
Mini :
When I go to ecological park.I saw many trees and flowers, and it is very beautiful. I want everyones knows this beautiful ecological park.
Jacky:
There is a very beautiful and nature place. There are many insects, too. So I really like there.

The Lungshan Temple 龍山寺
I am Mena. I want to intrduce the oldest Buddhist temple in Taiwan. I took a trip to the north part of Taiwan during the Chinese New Year, 2009. According to the Chinese tradition, my parents took me to the Lungshan Temple. We worshiped and wished to have a peaceful year.
Why did we choose the Lungshan Temple? It is the oldest Buddhist temple in Taiwan. It was originally built in 1738. It is noted for its architecture. It has very elaborate roof decorations, large stone columns, wood carvings and gold-leafed Buddhas.
The temple houses images of the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin) and a number of other gods venerated in Chinese folk beliefs. It is also listed as the second-grade historic site in Taiwan.

Chinese Festivals
Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and together with Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival forms one of the three major Chinese holidays. Since the summer is a time when diseases most easily spread, Dragon Boat Festival began as an occasion for driving off evil spirits and pestilence and for finding peace in one's life. The festival was later enriched by the legend of the patriot Chu Yuan.
Dragon Boat Festival is highlighted by the dragon boat races, in which competing teams drive their boats forward rowing to the rhythm of pounding drums. This lively and colorful tradition has continued unbroken for centuries to the present day.
The festival's significance as a time for warding off evil and disease is symbolized by a number of customary practices such as hanging calamus and moxa on the front door, and pasting up pictures of Chung Kuei (a nemesis of evil spirits). Adults drink hsiung huang wine and children are given fragrant sachets, both of which are said to possess qualities for preventing evil and bringing peace. Another custom practiced in Taiwan is "fetching noon water," in which people draw well water on the afternoon of the festival in the belief that it will cure illness. And if you can successfully stand an egg on its end exactly at 12:00 noon, then the coming year will be a lucky one.
The most popular dish during Dragon Boat Festival is tzung tzu, originally eaten in memory of the patriot Chu Yuan, but gradually evolving into a snack eaten during normal occasions as well.
Of all the major holidays celebrated in China, Dragon Boat Festival has the longest history. Occurring at the beginning of summer when insects thrive, the festival was distinguished from other occasions in earlier days as a time for reminding family members to take care of their health. The Chinese continue to heed this wisdom, however, by replacing the traditional customs of hanging calamus and moxa, drinking hsiung huang wine, and giving sachets, with more advanced methods for protecting one's health.

Small sausage in big sausage
A sausage inside a sausage? How can that be?
A small sausage wrapped in a big sausage (大腸包小腸), a common snack in Taiwanese night market. A grilled Taiwanese sweet pork sausage wrapped in a grilled salty sticky rice sausage. Usually wrapped with garlic and basil. Customer can also choose flavor of their want, such as black pepper, garlic, chilly, butter, and chocolate.

Coffin Board?
Coffin board?
How terrifying it is to have coffin board as one of the Taiwanese local food.
Actually it is the image of a square shaped, middle-hollowed toast with stuffings inside that creats this name for the local snack in southern part of Taiwan.
Coffin Bread (棺材板 guān cái ban) is similar to French toast, but filled with savory fillings, such as black pepper beef or curried chicken. Thick cut bread is dipped in egg, deep fried, cut along three sides, opened and filled, and eaten.
Are you scared by the name of the food?
I don’t want to see anything to do with coffin, not to mention food and to eat it.
Ha, it’s the appearance of the food that Taiwanese come up with such a name for this yummy snack.Want to have a try? I’ll show you when you visit us.

Stinky bean curd
What is the stinky smell?
Like Durian is the most famous and also notorious fruit in Tailand; strong-smelling fermented bean curd is one of the specialties of Taiwanese local food which tastes so good yet smells so bad.
With some pickled vegetable slices on top of the crispy outside, juicy inside bean curd and special sauce, you will miss it ever you have a try on it.
